I arrived in Durham, via the train, at 1:30. By 2:00, I was checked in and walking towards the city. I missed lunch while on the train, so I grabbed a snack. Steak pie!!!
The best part of lunch was this guy in the square where I was eating. He's singing karaoke religious songs in the styling of Elvis. Pretty great.
I walked up to the cathedral. No pictures inside, so this will have to do.
They had an exhibit of archaeological finds from the Norman invasion and the establishment of the cathedral. The cool part is they have copies of the Magna Carta from 1273. After the exhibit, I had a walk around the cathedral, then back outside.
From here a pedestrian bridge across the river.
Then I wandered to a pub recommendation by Sholto, The Dun Cow. Good beer, a little quiet, but I ended up chatting with a man whose daughter had worked in San Francisco.
Afterwards, I headed back to the cathedral for evensong. It was sparsely attende but still lovely. I headed back into town and went to Head of Steam on Sholto's recommendation. A great selection. I had a 12% Belgian dark, then a Tontine milk stout.
I had dinner at an Italian restaurant (also on Sholto's list). At the table next to me was a grandfather, parents and a little girl less than two, with white blonde hair and blue eyes. She was lovely and busy. It reminded me of when mine were little.
