Edinburgh to St. Andrews

We woke up and Madeleine was still ill.  It was a slight change to the schedule, but nothing significant.

The three of us got ready and packed, then, walked up the hill to the castle.  I explained to Alexandra that because we were so far north, the hills (mountains) didn't have any trees.  Since we were so close to the North Sea, the weather moved in very quickly.  And that wind, was really more of a breeze, the wind actually blows much harder here.  It all combines to make the seemingly harmless hills very dangerous places to hike.

I took in the views of the city, then headed back to the hotel to motivate Madeleine.  Taxi to the airport, then we picked up the rental car.

We decided to take the coastal road to St. Andrews.  45 miles, 2 1/2 hours.  I should have taken photos, but it was really more something you experience.  Slight, rolling countryside with mile after mile of stone fences.

We arrived in St. Andrews, dropped Madeleine off and went to the hotel.  Cathie said it was near the golf course.   The hotel is on the old course. The view from the parking lot is the view you get on TV of the 18th green with the clubhouse in the background.  Yep, I had to dump the bike last summer or I would be playing this trip.  I'm about a month away from picking up a club and starting to swing.

Dinner in the hotel pub with one of Madeleine's roommates then a quiet evening in. Alexandra couldn't stay with Madeleine because Madeleine was still sick, so we tried to get a roll away bed into our room.  It wouldn't fit.  So the hotel put me up in a corner room that looked like a converted attic.  The sign on the door was The Caddie Shelter and that was an accurate description.  It was barely big enough for one person.
