Day 4 - St. Andrews then off to Banchory

With Madeleine missing some classes earlier in the week, we decided to delay our departure on Tuesday until she was done with class for the day. So we packed up in the morning, picked up Skootch from Madeleine's and went for a wander around St. Andrews.

When we first got to St. Andrews, we came across this road sign.  Cathie said it is a very common Scottish name for a road.  Alexandra and I spent the rest of the trip giggling about it.

We crossed the Old Course and I tried to explain to Cathie why that little bridge was important, and how the British Open looks when they finish here.  I think I'll have to wait until 2015, then show it to her.

This is the beach from Chariots of Fire. I know, it looks a lot like a beach.

We walked south along the sidewalk next to the water.  This takes you to the castle ruins which have been ruins since 1650.

As you keep walking, the path runs into the wall surrounding the cathedral ruins.  The cathedral was the largest cathedral built in Scotland.  It has been ruins since 1560.

We met Madeleine and her friend Sarah (also a Holy Names student) for lunch at a coffee shop.

One more class for Madeleine, then we were off to Raemoir House just outside of Banchory.  Cathie had picked this hotel for our two nights up north.

We celebrated Cathie's birthday from a month ago with Madeleine.  We had a very nice dinner at the hotel's restaurant.  The chef, David Littlewood, is this year's Scottish chef of the year.  I started with the venison tartare which was one of the dishes he used in the competition.  It was an excellent meal and a very nice time with the family.
